This long weekend marks Canada’s 145th birthday and Toronto’s 32nd annual Pride Parade. While we are all eagerly waiting for the clock to strike 5 and the work day to be over we have compiled some light-hearted and inspiring images to get you in that long weekend “proud to be a Canadian” mood.
Canada is a country where we are known for being nice, helpful, generous and accepting of others. These attributes are what make us truly unique. We cross boundaries when it comes to race, religion and sexual orientation. Since 2005, Canada has offered civil marriage rights nationwide to same-sex couples. Canada was the third nation in the world where same-sex marriages were legally performed (commencing in 2003 in the province of Ontario), the fourth nation in the world to perform same-sex marriages nationwide, and it was the first nation in the Americas to perform such marriages nationwide. And this weekend Toronto hosts the third-biggest Pride festival in the world where millions of gay and straight people join to partake in the festivities and share their pride.
Over my lifetime as an 8th generation Canadian I have seen so many stereotypes diminish. But sometimes I come to think that fat intolerance may be one of the last forms of socially accepted discrimination in Canada. Let’s hope that over the next few years we can change this too! The gay community went against what society expected from them, which was to to change and to conform. The said to hell with them , joined together with pride and marched on to change the views of society. This is what I hope will continue with all of our efforts in the plus size community and via the ever growing plus size movement. We are proud to be Canadian and proud to live in a country that is so supportive and accepting of others.
HAPPY CANADA DAY & HAPPY PRIDE 2012!
